Unawatuna is a cool place to visit on the southern coast of Sri Lanka. It is a bustling beach town that people from over the world love to visit because it has beautiful golden sand, a fun nightlife and a lot of history. Unawatuna is five kilometers south of the old city of Galle so it is easy to get to whether you are just visiting for the weekend or staying for a long time as a digital nomad.

The main reason people visit Unawatuna is the Unawatuna Beach, which is shaped like a crescent. Unawatuna Beach is famous for its water and safe swimming conditions. There is a coral reef just off the shore that protects the beach from the strong ocean currents making it a great place to swim. The beach has a lot of restaurants, bars and hotels along the shore. They are all lively and fun especially at night when the sun sets over the Indian Ocean.

If you want to explore more there are some really nice beaches near Unawatuna. For example Jungle Beach is a beach that you can get to by walking through a forest on the Rumassala headland. It is a place to snorkel and relax. Another beach, Dalawella Beach is a short drive away and has a famous coconut tree rope swing, as well as a beautiful shallow lagoon that is perfect for wading.

Unawatuna also has a lot of things to see and do. There is a Japanese Peace Pagoda on the rocky cliffs overlooking the bay, which has stunning views of the ocean and the old Galle Fort. If you visit the pagoda in the afternoon you can watch the sunset from one of the most peaceful spots on the island.

If you are planning to visit Unawatuna you should try to come between December and April when the weather’s dry and sunny and the sea is calm. This is the time to go diving and swimming. The rest of the year Unawatuna is still open. It can be rainy and the waves can be rough which makes it harder to swim and dive.
