The Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, also known as the Red Mosque is one of Colombos famous landmarks and a must-visit place in Sri Lanka. This travel guide provides everything you need to plan your visit to this candy-striped mosque.

## Overview & History

The local Indian Muslim community built the mosque and construction started in 1908 and finished in 1909. Habibu Labbe Saibu Labbe designed the building, which has a mix of Indo-Saracenic, Gothic Revival and Neoclassical architecture.

* The Pomegranate Design: The red and white patterns on the mosque were inspired by pomegranates.

* Sailors Guide: In the 1900s the mosques tall minarets helped sailors find their way to the Colombo port.

* Capacity: The mosque was expanded in 1975. Can now hold up to 10,000 worshippers.

This is an active place of worship so you need to follow the dress code.

* Clothing: You must dress modestly. Cover your shoulders and knees.

* Free Cover-ups: If you don’t have the clothes the mosque provides free sarongs for men and abayas for women at the entrance.

* Footwear: You must remove your shoes before entering the mosque. There are shoe cubbies at the entrance.

* Photography: Always ask for permission before taking photos of people inside the mosque. Don’t take pictures during prayer sessions.

## How to Get There

The Red Mosque is in the Pettah market area 4 kilometers from central Colombo.

* By Tuk-Tuk / Ride Share: This is the way to get there. You can book a ride using apps like PickMe or Uber.

* By Train: Go to the Colombo Fort Railway Station. Then its a 10-15 minute walk to the mosque.

And

* By Bus: Go to the Pettah Central Bus Station. Then walk about 800 meters down Second Cross Street.
