Mandaram Nuwara is a beautiful village. It is hidden in a valley that is often covered in mist. This valley is at the foot of Pidurutalagala, which’s the highest mountain in Sri Lanka. The village is surrounded by green hills. That is why people call it the Misty City. Sometimes the fog is so thick that you can not see anything. The sun does not shine for a time in Mandaram Nuwara because the mountains block the light.
A time ago the kings of Kandy used to hide in Mandaram Nuwara when they were running away from the colonial invaders. Today it is a place for travelers who want to experience the real Sri Lanka.
Chasing Waterfalls and Streams
Mandaram Nuwara has a lot of waterfalls and streams. This is because the village is in a place that collects a lot of water. One of the famous waterfalls is Kolapathana Ella. It is a waterfall that drops down a rocky hill into a pool of water. To get to Kolapathana Ella you have to walk through a forest and some fields. You can hear the sound of the water as you walk. There is another waterfall called Kabaragala Ella. It is in a jungle. It is very quiet.
Hiking and Trekking
Mandaram Nuwara is great for people who love hiking and trekking. There are trails that you can follow. One of the trails is called Kodigahana Kanda. It is a trail that takes you up a steep hill. You can see tea plantations and cloud forests as you climb. The air is cool and fresh. When you get to the top you can see the valley. Some of the trails are, near a forest that is protected by the government. This forest has different kinds of plants and birds.

Mandaram Nuwara is a traditional village. The people grow vegetables and tea in the hills. You can see the gardens as you walk through the village. The people are very friendly. They are happy to talk to you. You can learn about their farming methods. Drink some tea with them.

If you want to visit Mandaram Nuwara you have to plan. The village is hard to get to because the roads are narrow and windy. You need a vehicle to get there. The weather can change quickly so you need to bring clothes and a raincoat. There are not places to stay in the village so you need to book ahead.
