The Best Place to Go Kitesurfing

The place to go kitesurfing in Sri Lanka is Kalpitiya. It is a piece of land that sticks out into the ocean on the northwest coast of the island.

The main reason people like to kitesurf in Kalpitiya is because of the lagoon there. The lagoon is an area of flat water that is separated from the ocean by a small strip of sand. This makes the wind very consistent and easy to predict, which is perfect for learning skills or practicing tricks.

There are kitesurfing schools in Kalpitiya that can teach you how to kitesurf. They have instructors from countries, boats that can rescue you if you need help and good equipment that you can rent. 

Exciting Trips and Secret Spots

If you want to go on an adventure and kitesurf in places there are many exciting trips you can take. You can go to Vella Island, which’s about forty-five minutes away from Kalpitiya by boat. Vella Island is a place for kitesurfers who like to do tricks because the water is very smooth and the wind is strong.

There is another place called Kappalady Lagoon, which’s just south of Kalpitiya. It is an quiet place with very steady wind, which makes it perfect for kitesurfers who want to practice without many people around.

Two Windy Seasons

In Sri Lanka there are two seasons when the wind is good for kitesurfing. The first season is from May to September. It is the strongest. The wind blows from the southwest. Is usually very strong which is great for kitesurfers who like a challenge.

The second season is from December to February. It is a bit lighter. The wind is cleaner. Comes from the side, which is perfect for kitesurfers who like to use bigger kites and prefer calmer conditions. 

Other Places to Kitesurf

While the northwest coast of Sri Lanka is the place for kitesurfing on flat water the southern coast is great for kitesurfing on waves.

There are towns on the southern coast like Ahangama, Matara and Hiriketiya where you can kitesurf on the ocean waves. The wind is not as strong as, in Kalpitiya. It is still a lot of fun.

The southern coast is also a place to visit if you want to do other things like surfing and going out at night.
