The Wattura Resort & Spa is a nice luxury boutique beachfront resort. It is located in Waikkal, which’s north of Negombo. This resort is situated between Waikkal Beach and the Gin Oya estuary. What I like about the Wattura Resort & Spa is that it is not in a tourist area. The Wattura Resort & Spa is more about having privacy. You can enjoy the water views. Focus on your wellness. The accommodation, at the Wattura Resort & Spa is spacious. Overall the Wattura Resort & Spa offers a resort experience.
What is it about Wattura that makes it so special?
Wattura is a cool place. The name Wattura actually means water in Sinhala. So the people who designed Wattura thought about water a lot when they were creating it.
Wattura is in a spot. It is between the Indian Ocean and the beach on the West Coast and the Gin Oya river and the estuary. This means you can see the ocean and the river at the time which is really nice.
So Wattura is perfect if you want these things:
🌴 A pretty place with palm trees
🏖️ To be able to walk on the beach
🌊 To be near a river or a lagoon
🧘 To relax and feel good at a spa
🏊 To swim in a pool
❤️ A place to go with the person you love
👨👩👧👦 A nice place to take your family that is not too expensive
✈️ A place to stay that is close to the airport, in Colombo so it is easy to get to Wattura when you first arrive or when you are leaving.
🏨 Accommodation
One of Watturas features is the size of its accommodation.
🛏️ Suites
The standard suites at Wattura are around 780 feet. They are designed to be private retreats rather than small hotel rooms. You get a lot of room to move around in the suites at Wattura.
🏊 Duplex Pool Villa
The Duplex Pool Villa at Wattura is 2,300 square feet. It is a two storey villa with a view of the ocean. I think the Duplex Pool Villa at Wattura is the choice if you want a lot of privacy and space and a private pool and a romantic atmosphere.
🌊 Gin Oya Suite
The Gin Oya Suite at Wattura is around 2,800 feet. It has two bedrooms and a view of the Gin Oya river. The Gin Oya Suite at Wattura is designed to give you space and privacy. The Gin Oya Suite at Wattura can accommodate up to six people.
👑 Wattura Residence
The Wattura Residence at Wattura is the option. It is around 4,400 feet. The Wattura Residence at Wattura has two bedrooms and a private garden. You can walk right onto the beach. The Wattura Residence at Wattura also has a rooftop pool that goes on forever. I think the Wattura Residence at Wattura is perfect, for families or groups of people who want their private space at Wattura.
🏊 Pool & beach
The resort has a large layered infinity-style pool, with the design inspired by the Twin Ponds of Anuradhapura and incorporating a waterfall feature.
The property also has direct beach access, making it possible to alternate between:
Pool → beach → spa → restaurant → sunset
without needing to leave the resort.
Important distinction
Wattura is better thought of as a relaxing resort beach than as a destination for a packed beach-town experience.
If your priority is nightlife, surfing and lots of restaurants immediately outside the hotel, Weligama, Hiriketiya or Mirissa may suit you better. If your priority is privacy and resort relaxation, Wattura makes considerably more sense.
🧖 Wattura Spa
Wellness is one of the resort’s major selling points.
The spa includes treatments inspired by natural ingredients and Sri Lankan wellness traditions. The resort also describes a Hydro Lounge with a steam room, temperature-controlled pools, waterfall and relaxation area.
Best use of the spa
I’d structure a relaxing day like:
Morning yoga → breakfast → pool/beach → lunch → spa treatment → sunset → dinner
rather than trying to fill every hour with excursions.

🍽️ Dining
The resort’s main restaurant is Pappali.
The current property information describes cuisine ranging from local Sri Lankan food to international options, with breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, high tea and cocktails available.
And the resort also promotes private dining experiences.
What to eat in Sri Lanka
Even if you’re staying at a luxury resort, make a point of trying:
🍛 Sri Lankan rice & curry
🥞 Egg hoppers
🔥 Kottu roti
🥥 Pol sambol
🐟 Seafood curry
🍜 String hoppers
🍮 Watalappam
☕ Ceylon tea

📍 Where is Wattura?
Wattura is in Kammala South, Waikkal, in Sri Lankas Western Province.
The resort is 20 kilometers from Bandaranaike International Airport and it takes around 30 minutes to get to Wattura from Negombo by car but this can be longer if the traffic is bad.
Wattura is also 22 kilometers from the airport and about 10 kilometers from the main part of Negombo Beach according to the information we have from other people.
Why Wattura is a place to stay
Wattura is a great place for
✈️ when you first get to Sri Lanka
✈️ when you are leaving Sri Lanka
🏖️ a short trip to the beach
❤️ a romantic trip with your partner
🧘 a trip to relax and be well
Wattura is not the best place if you want to see all of Sri Lanka because it is near the beach and not, in the middle of the country.
🗺️ What can you visit nearby?

🛏️ How many nights should you stay?
1 night
Perfect for an airport stopover.
Arrive → resort → dinner → sleep → breakfast → continue.
2 nights
Good for a short luxury escape.
You can actually enjoy the pool, beach and spa.
3 nights
My recommendation for most resort-focused travelers.
Enough time to slow down and use the facilities rather than simply sleeping there.
4–5 nights
Worth considering if you want a proper wellness/beach vacation with excursions.
