Anuradhapura is a big area in Sri Lanka. It covers a lot of land in the North Central Province. This place is where old Sri Lankan culture started. People who like history and spiritual things will love it here.
It is very different from the cities in the south. Anuradhapura has plains and huge old stupas. There are also lakes that people made a long time ago. These lakes have helped people live on the island for a long time. If you want to see all of Sri Lanka you have to come to Anuradhapura.
The Sacred City of Anuradhapura is in the middle of the area. It is a special place and a UNESCO World Heritage site. A time ago it was the capital of old Sri Lanka. You can walk around this park and see amazing old buildings like the Ruwanwelisaya and Jetavanaramaya stupas. These buildings were some of the tallest in the world. There is also an old tree , the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi. It is a tree because it came from the tree where Lord Buddha became enlightened. People can spend days looking at the old carvings and gardens here.
Anuradhapura was able to survive for a time because of its good water system. There are lakes called tanks or wewas. These lakes were built by kings like King Mahasen. They collected rainwater. Made the dry land good for farming. Today these lakes are not just for farming. They are also places to watch the sunset and take a boat ride. You can see fishermen catching fish. The areas around these lakes have become homes for animals. They are places to go to get away from the busy old city.
Anuradhapura is not about old buildings and spiritual places. It also has a lot of animals and natural beauty. There is a park called Wilpattu National Park. It is the oldest park, in Sri Lanka.
