The Poruwa Ritual

The Poruwa ceremony is the part of the wedding.

The couple gets on a nice wooden platform that  decorated with beautiful things.

There are flowers and betel leaves all over the special platform.

Someone who is in charge of the ceremony helps the couple do all the rituals.

The priest ties the couples pinky fingers with a gold thread.

Then he pours water over their hands that are joined together.

This water ritual means that the couple will be together forever.

Some young girls sing blessings together in a nice voice.

The groom puts a gold necklace around the brides neck.

At the end they break a coconut to get rid of luck.

Royal Bridal Attire

The way people dress for a wedding in Sri Lanka is very fancy. Reminds us of the royal family.

The bride wears a silk saree from Kandyan.

Her whole wedding dress has gold embroidery on it.

She wears seven gold necklaces that mean luck and prosperity.

She also wears an ornament on her forehead that makes her look really nice.

The groom looks like a king from Kandyan times.

He wears a nice velvet costume with many layers.

His jacket is special because it is embroidered by hand on velvet.

The couple looks really elegant and royal together.

Feast And Celebration

The party after the wedding is really fun with music and dancing.

There are drummers who play wedding music on Kandyan drums.

Dancers dance nicely to welcome the married couple.

Everyone eats a lot of food at the party.

There is much yellow rice and curry on the tables.

The tables are also full of sweets, like crispy kokis.

Friends and family give speeches and drink to the happy couple.

The dance floor is filled with people dancing to music.

The big party goes on late into the night.
