The Kotagala Tunnel is one of Sri Lankas amazing colonial-era railway feats. It is hidden in the misty hills of the Nuwara Eliya District. This tunnel goes directly through the base of the Singha Malai Mountain between Hatton and Kotagala. It is a highlight on the famous Colombo-to-Badulla Main Line.

Marvels of Colonial Engineering
The construction of the tunnel was an achievement. It built during the colonial time. Sir Guilford Lindsey Molesworth designed it. F.W. Faviell built it. The tunnel is called Tunnel Number Fourteen. It finished in the 19th century. The tunnel is 562 meters long and 5.5 meters wide. Workers dug it by hand from both sides of the mountain until they met in the middle.
The tunnel has a curve inside. You can’t see light from one end when looking from the other. This makes the inside very dark. The tunnel also slopes downward in the middle. The Kotagala Railway Station is 23 meters lower than the Hatton station. The tunnel was originally called the Poolbank Tunnel. It goes under the Poolbank Tea Estate. The estate was started in 1880. Later it was called Singha Malai. This name means Lion Mountain in Tamil. Its named after the rock formations that look like a lion.

Visiting the tunnel area is an nostalgic experience. You can walk along the paths next to the tracks. You can see the colonial tea fields. Local workers still pick tea leaves by hand. Watching the Podi Menike or Udarata Menike trains go into the tunnel is amazing. It’s a sight for photographers.
You can also visit the Kotagala Railway Station. It’s over 1,200 meters above sea level. The station still looks charming and old. Its built in the style. The area is also great for finding waterfalls. You can see Devon Falls or St. Clairs Falls. St. Clairs Falls is called the Little Niagara of Sri Lanka.
Essential Travel Logistics
Getting to Kotagala is easy. It’s on the way to highland places. The best way to see the tunnel is on the Main Line train from Colombo Fort to Ella or Badulla. You can sit on the observation deck. Ride through the tunnel. If you’re driving Kotagala is on the A7 Avissawella-Hatton-Nuwara Eliya Highway. It’s about a 1.5-hour drive from Nuwara Eliya or a 3-hour drive from Colombo.
The best time to visit is from January to April. The weather is sunny and dry. From May to September it’s rainy and foggy. It’s not good for walking near the tracks. If you do walk near the railway line be careful. Check the train schedule. Never go on the tracks, inside the tunnel. It’s very dark and not safe.
