A Symphony of Fire, Faith and Elephants: The Ultimate Guide to the Kandy Esala Perahera

Deep in Sri Lankas misty mountain capital a centuries-old ritual comes alive every summer. It turns the night into a display of color, light and sound. The Kandy Esala Perahera is not a festival it’s the cultural heartbeat of the nation. It is one of the most spectacular Buddhist pageants in Asia. For ten nights the streets around Kandy Lake become a carnival. You will see fire-twirlers, traditional drummers, acrobatic whip-crackers and decorated elephants.

The Kandy Esala Perahera festival is about the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha. This sacred relic is kept in Kandys roofed temple palace. A time ago the procession had two main purposes. It was a plea to the gods for rain to help the rice crops grow. It was also a display of the kings power. Today the festival combines traditions with a grand display of the sacred relic.

As the sun sets the procession starts with a gunshot. Then you hear the cracking of whips followed by fire-dancers spinning blazing rings of light. The master drummers beat drums making deep sounds. They are followed by Kandyan dancers in shimmering clothes. The highlight of the evening is the Maligawa Tusker. This is an elephant dressed in gold-embroidered velvet robes. It carries a replica casket of the relic.
