## Best Surf in Sri Lanka: A Complete Travel Guide

Sri Lanka is great for surfing. People of all levels from beginners to experts come here. The island has two monsoon seasons. This means you can find waves, warm water and nice winds somewhere in Sri Lanka all year round.

## Understanding Sri Lankas Surf Seasons

The best time to plan your surf trip is crucial. The islands weather divides the surfing year into two seasons:

* November to April: Southwest Coast (places like Hikkaduwa, Weligama and Mirissa)

* May to October: East Coast (Arugam Bay)

And

* The Southwest Coast (November to April) has waves and calm morning conditions. Places like Weligama and Hikkaduwa become surf spots.

* The East Coast (May to October) has winds from the southwest. Arugam Bay becomes a spot with long right-hand waves.

Best Surf Spots on the Southwest Coast (November to April)

### 1. Weligama Bay (Best for Beginners)

Weligama is the place to learn surfing in Sri Lanka. The big sandy bay protects the beach from currents. This creates waves, perfect for beginners. Many surf schools and board rentals are available.

### 2. Hikkaduwa (Best for Intermediate to Advanced)

## Practical Surf Logistics for Travelers

* Board Rentals vs. Packing Your Own: If you’re a beginner don’t bring a board. Rentals cost around AUD $10–$15 per day. If you’re intermediate or advanced bring your shortboard.

* Wetsuit Requirements: You don’t need a wetsuit. The ocean is warm around 27°C to 29°C. Bring a guard, sunscreen and boardshorts.

* Getting Around with a Board: Hire a tuk-tuk with roof racks to travel with your board. Most drivers, in surf towns have straps to secure your gear.
