The Cultural Heart of Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka has a lot of treasures in its famous Cultural Triangle. This makes it a great place for people who love history. The big rock fortress of Sigiriya is very famous. Visitors climb past carved lion paws to get to an old palace. The palace surrounded by water gardens.
The ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa are nearby. They show us what early Sinhalese civilization was like. You can see big stupas, carved moonstones and old irrigation reservoirs.
The Dambulla Cave Temple is also here. It is a cliffside cave with many colorful Buddhist statues and murals. These have preserved for centuries.
Misty Highlands and Tea Country
As you move to the highlands the landscape changes. It becomes a world with rolling hills and cool air. The city of Kandy is the gateway to this area. Many people come to visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic. It is near a central lake.
Further in the mountains is Nuwara Eliya. It is called Little England because of its buildings. It has golf courses and a misty climate. This is good for growing tea.
Taking a train from Nuwara Eliya to Ella is an experience. You see waterfalls, deep valleys and big tea estates. This is where Ceylon tea is grown.
Wildlife Safaris and Natural Wonders
Sri Lanka is known for its different kinds of animals. It is easy to see wildlife. Yala National Park is on the coast. It has leopards. Visitors might see these cats in the dry woods and coastal lagoons.
Minneriya National Park is a place to see Asian elephants. Every year many elephants gather around a reservoir.
The southern coast is a place to see marine life. You can see whales and dolphins in the Indian Ocean.
Colonial Charm and Coastal Escapes
Traveling across Sri Lanka leads you to its coastline. Here old charm meets relaxation. The fortified city of Galle is on the southwest coast. Visitors can walk on cobblestone streets. See Dutch-colonial villas.
There are also shops and heritage hotels. They are sheltered by seaside walls.
The southern and eastern coasts have beach towns like Unawatuna, Mirissa and Arugam Bay. Each has a feel. You can watch fishermen or relax on the beach.
